"Song For A Fifth Child" was written in 1921 by Ruth Hulbert Hamilton and first published within "Ladies Home Journal" in 1958. My 21st century version obviously isn't a patch on the original gem, but I hope you enjoy it anyway! How many of us can relate to this??
Mama, oh mama, come pick up your phone!
Empty the dishwasher, it's a WiFi zone,
Put a load on to wash and update your tweets,
Your inbox is calling, is the house nice and neat?
Where is the mama, whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking!
Oh, I've grown forgetful, as great old Aunt Sue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby, loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for tea
Whilst the phone's busy shouting; "Look! Look at me!"
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.)
Oh, cleaning and twitter will wait till tomorrow,
But children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, Facebook. Dust, go to sleep.
Never heard of the original before - but thank you for this! So very true, a great reminder.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it, J!
